Rick Cresswell is a regularly commissioned artist specialising in work surrounding the body or involving interactive installation. Using traditional and digital and time-based mark making.
Rick gained a 1st class BA Hon in Fine Art at Exeter College of Art and Design, a Saint Martin’s Master’s degree in Independent Film and Video and a three year multi-disciplinary Masters degree in Theology with Aesthetics and Philosophy at the University of Exeter.
Intellectual Influences: René Descartes, Emmanuel Kant, Jurgen Mültman, Thomas Aquinas and various Ancient Semitic philosophies.
Creative Influences: Andrey Tarkovsky, Bill Viola, Antony Gorman, Frances Bacon and Gunter von Hagen.
Current Exhibitions: RILD, Exeter Healthcare Arts at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and The University of Exeter.
I am interested in the philosophy of mind, dualism: the body as machine and the orientation that mental phenomena may be non-physical: that the mind and body are not necessarily identical. I am intrigued by the relationship between mind and matter and the realm beyond the noumenon. I am compelled to explore the idea that phenomenon aesthetically implies the realm of the noumenon.
My current work is centred around medical imaging and the re-presentation of that semiologically.
